Grounding (Earthing)

Grounding (or Earthing) is a term that means re-centering and reconnecting with the Earth. It is the process of absorbing earth’s free flowing electrons from its surface through the soles of one’s feet. It is done by reconnecting your body with the free electrons that flow through the Earth’s surface. It is as easy as walking barefoot outdoors.

Our day-to-day activities build up a positive charge in the body. Earth naturally has an endless supply of negative electrons. When you walk barefoot on the earth, you return your body to a neutrally charged state. Anytime anything in your life feels as though it could use more balance, grounding is a good idea. Grounding is also helpful for Empaths when they take on energy that is not your own and can also be a useful tool when dealing with anxiety. When you are not grounded, you may feel: dazed, disconnected, flighty, lightheaded, shaky, tired, or like you are floating. These feelings and sensations can happen when you’ve got excess energy running through your system.

When we are grounded, we will feel: calm, alert, focused, present, centered, strong, less tense, balanced, less stressed and peaceful. When you’re grounded, you’re in complete control of your mental and emotional self.

Grounding can:

  • Assist with digestion issues

  • Assist with tissue repair/healing

  • Benefit heart health

  • Boost your mood

  • Help with bloating

  • Help with depression

  • Improve blood circulation

  • Improve blood pressure

  • Improve immune function

  • Improve sleep patterns

  • Reduce cortisol

  • Reduce inflammation

Grounding techniques assist you in becoming re-rooted to your physical self, by reconnecting with the physical world. Some things you can do to ground yourself include:

  • Consume root vegetables, like potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, ginger, garlic and onions.

  • Drink water

  • Apply Essential oils (i.e. Frankincense, Sandalwood, Cypress, or Patchouli)

  • Hold or carry a grounding crystal (Black Obsidian, Black Tourmaline, Bloodstone, Hematite, Jet, Moss Agate, Petrified Wood, Red Jasper, Shungite and Smokey Quartz)

  • Lay backside on the ground

  • Listen to music and shamanic drumming

  • Mediate

  • Spend time gardening (with your hands in the soil)

  • Spend time in bodies of water, baths and showers

  • Spend time with animals and pets

  • Take a walk in nature

  • Unplug from electronic devices, social media and streaming services
